Some days in class I play music if it's a work day. Like yesterday in all my classes kids were reviewing concepts so I didn't have to teach much. (And to those few students who read this blog, you're welcome.) So I decided to play some music. And what's funny is that every class has there own musical identity, if you will. One class, 5th hour, loves country. There's never a question as to what I'm going to play. The students just pick a country artist and Pandora creates a radio station of songs. It's a good thing.
My funniest music experiences come from my 6th hour freshman class. First, this is a seriously cool class. Good kids, relaxed, smart, funny . . . all the good stuff. I was sort of dreading teaching freshman again, to be honest, and this group proved me wrong. So the first time I asked them for a station for Pandora, they answered "The Beatles!" With a chorus of "Yeah!" Um, OK. I thought. And off we rocked to the Beatles. Second time I asked, the answer was CCR! Yes, as in Creedance Clearwater Revival. OK, didn't see THAT coming. But I played it. And if you don't know who they are, aren't you a little young to be reading my blog? And yesterday when I asked, the answer was "Boston." I was floored. I didn't know anyone under the age of 40 knew Boston. Well, at one point the song "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey came on, and the whole class sang along to it. Now I know it was done on Glee, but I'm telling you, this class is full of Classic rockers! FUNNY!
Now it's also a little bit weird. See, I was THERE when Boston was popular. And I do mean "THERE" in the most literal sense. Don't Stop Believin' was released in 1981, my first year of high school. I teach at the same school where I went to high school. In fact, I teach in the very room where I had Geometry class. in 1981. So when I'm sitting in that room, listening to the very songs that were popular when I was a high school student, it's a bit disconcerting. The feeling is a mixture of nostalgia and nausea. Like, good God, am I being transported back in time? Back to high school ala "Peggy Sue Got Married?" Because I vote no!
And the fact that music of my generation is considered "Classic?" I won't even touch that one.
So one funny Jenna story before I sign out. Yesterday after school she wanted some "Vernors," which needs explanation for some out of Michigan. It's a pop (or soda) that is ginger flavored. Very, very carbonated, and a distinct taste. You either love it or hate it, and I love it! So when Jenna asked for it, I didn't remember her ever liking it. So I asked, "Jenna, have you ever tried Vernor's?" And she answered. "Yeah, mom. It's the pop that gives you stingy nose burps." And I bust out laughing. Very aptly put, as any of you who have tried Vernor's can attest.
Have a great Saturday . . . I mean is there any other kind? And I leave you with this.
